The Assessor, the Board of Review & beyond
What is PTAB, the Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board?
PTAB is a state-level board that hears property-tax assessment appeals after the county Board of Review. If the Cook County Board of Review denies you or does not reduce your assessment enough, you can appeal to PTAB (or, alternatively, to the Circuit Court of Cook County). It is a further step, not the first one.
Most homeowners resolve their assessment at the Assessor or Board of Review stage. PTAB matters when you have a strong case that the county stages rejected and you are willing to pursue a longer state-level process.
